Packaging for Black Forest cuckoo clocks: safe flight across the pond guaranteed

Tradition and perfect packaging come together for a successful Atlantic crossing – how Trenkle Uhren and Karl Knauer joined forces to safely bring Black Forest craftsmanship to America.
Cuckoo! Cuckoo! This familiar call immediately brings to mind the dense forests and charming villages of the Black Forest region. The cuckoo clock is more than just a timekeeper, it’s a piece of living tradition, a true work of art that captures the spirit of the region. The Black Forest-based clock manufacturer Trenkle Uhren GmbH from Simonswald is known for its handcrafted cuckoo clocks, which bring together tradition and skilled workmanship. Offering an impressive variety of designs, from classic pieces to modern interpretations, Trenkle Uhren brings the Black Forest clock tradition to life in ever fresh ways. Each clock is crafted with great care and attention to detail so that customers can enjoy an authentic piece of Black Forest charm.
The Black Forest clocks from Simonswald are also in great demand in the United States, resulting in Trenkle Uhren receiving a special order from overseas. To fulfil this order, the company needed a custom packaging solution for nine different cuckoo clocks that would be simultaneously robust, practical and visually appealing. Trenkle Uhren found the perfect partner for this challenge in Karl Knauer.

Acting on a recommendation, Trenkle Uhren contacted Karl Knauer and the two partners sat down together the very next day in Simonswald. “It was clear that we needed to move quickly,” recalls Thomas Schultheiss, Key Account Manager at Karl Knauer. The specific requirements were discussed intensively on site and the product development team got to work.
Just a few days later, Karl Knauer presented three creative packaging concepts that met all the requirements specified by Trenkle Uhren: a large, patched window for perfect presentation, a practical carrying handle and a single gift box solution capable of safely accommodating nine different clock models. The choice was quickly made in favour of the most robust option: packaging with double corrugation, a back-glued PET window and an elegant matt finish – a design that protects and looks great at the same time.
Thanks to precise planning and smooth coordination, production was completed within a week and the packaging was ready in time for dispatch to America.
“We were thoroughly impressed by the speed of realisation, the creative solutions and the excellent quality,” says Frank Trenkle from Trenkle Uhren, praising the collaboration. The company particularly valued the technically adept, professional advice provided and the support given when creating print data.
For Karl Knauer, this successful collaboration is another example of how custom solutions and quick turnaround ensure maximum customer satisfaction, whether that’s in the Black Forest or beyond.
