How do you package insects in order to save them?
Neher, the number 1 for tailor-made insect protection solutions, is the specialist when it comes to keeping small, creepy-crawly pests out of the house or, if they have managed to get in, gently removing them. For this purpose, the insect protection experts from Frittlingen have constructed “LIV”, an insect catcher with which small uninvited guests - such as spiders and insects - can be gently caught, safely transported and released back into the wild.
When a request came from Neher at the beginning of 2023 to develop a sustainable folding box for “LIV”, two packaging experts joined forces for whom sustainability, animal welfare and environmental protection are important concerns. The meetings took place exclusively online and thus without unnecessary journeys and travelling time, and yet they quickly led to a result that met the expectations and requirements of those responsible at Neher.
The special folding box with a chamber which perfectly protects the insect catcher during shipping, was realised by the Karl Knauer designers from a cardboard box made from certified forest use with FSC Mix. The material used has an impressive matte look and feel and provides a natural background for the three colours green, blue and sand, which correspond to the “LIV” designs.
A special feature of this project was the fact that the entire production was registered with the BVDM (German Printing and Media Industries Federation) and generated a total of only 6,901 kg of CO2. These emissions were offset by a solar energy project in India. “We are pleased that our portfolio includes Neher as a customer and “LIV” as a product that corresponds exactly to our values,” says Thomas Schultheiß, Key Account Manager at Karl Knauer. “The fact that one square metre of flowering meadow is created for every “LIV” purchased is the icing on the cake, because we also have a bee meadow on our doorstep which was sown by our trainees.”
