Seizing their futures:
the new apprentices at Karl Knauer
Many companies that take on apprentices complain about a lack of young talent but the Biberach-based packaging specialist Karl Knauer, no fewer than three young women and 10 men commenced apprenticeships early in September. Four of them are now starting their apprenticeships at the company location in Neuenstein near Heilbronn.
“Currently we have 27 apprentices and DHBW students preparing for careers in the packaging sector by training in 13 different trades,” says a delighted Markus Dilger, HR manager at Karl Knauer. “It is especially encouraging that we have been able to fill trades relevant to the sector like media designer, media specialist printer, packaging technologist and machine and equipment operator. Ultimately, we want to take steps to avert a shortage of specialists by committing to the next generation.”
Various trial options for school students
To attract school leavers to the packaging industry, the packaging specialist, who was also awarded apprentice company of the year, offers pupils, through a cooperation with schools such as Neuenstein Comprehensive School, the opportunity to gain an impression of the various trades through work placements, holiday jobs and sample days. In addition, Karl Knauer trainees organise lessons around the subject of packaging or work together with the students on smaller projects. “For us it’s not so much about filling apprenticeship places as finding the trade to match the aptitude of every young person so that they can apply their strengths and talents to full effect. In the end, this is essential if they are to feel comfortable with us and complete their courses successfully,” continues Markus Dilger. An example of how this calculation and the dedication to the apprentices come together, can be seen in Helmut Feuchter. He completed his apprenticeship in media technology in Neuenstein last year as national bestseller and was awarded by the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry for his great performance.
