The apprenticeship programme at Karl Knauer takes place at the Biberach plant as well as in full-time teaching blocks held at the Germsbach Paper Centre (Papierzentrum Gernsbach).
Areas of work/industriesMachine and system operators mainly work in the above-mentioned core areas in companies operating in the paper and plastics processing industries; for example, for manufacturers of paperboard and envelops made from paper or cardboard or packaging materials made from plastics. Beyond this, machine and system operators can also be employed in printing plants that print packaging material.
ActivitiesMachine and system operators manufacture packaging that optimally protects the contents of the package and simultaneously advertises for the product. In the manufacturing of packaging materials, they calibrate the machines and production lines, operate these and monitor the manufacturing process. They use the possibilities of system solutions, control technology and control centre technology as well as operational quality management. In addition, they also carry out the maintenance work on the machines and systems.
Places of workFor the most part, machine and system operators operate fully automatic production lines from control centres. In order to switch paper rolls or for performing maintenance work, they work directly on the machines that are located on the factory floor or in machine rooms.
