Industrial mechanic

Duration of apprenticeship3,5 years
The apprenticeship at Karl Knauer takes place at the Biberach plant and at the vocational school (currently located in Wolfach) on 1-2 days per week.
Areas of work/industriesIndustrial mechanics can work in almost all areas of a company, for example, in machine and automotive construction fields, in the industry for electronics or textiles as well as in the industry for wood and paper processing.
ActivitiesIndustrial mechanics work in manufacturing and maintenance areas where they ensure that machines and production lines are always in top operating condition. They assemble the same, install and verify their functionality. In order to perform these functions, industrial mechanics work in keeping with suitable testing methods, identify sources of disruption, order suitable spare parts or manufacture the same and carry out repairs. After conclusion of assembly and testing work, the colleagues instruct customers regarding operating and handling the machine. If they work in the area of machine manufacturing and precision-engineering equipment, then industrial mechanics manufacture parts made of metal and plastic. They turn, mill, drill and grind the material, weld or fasten the components as well as install and adjust them.
Place of workUsually, industrial mechanics work in a plant, on the factory floor or in a workshop. If, for example, they work at a machine or systems manufacturing company in either assembly or maintenance functions, they can also be deployed at different customer locations, if necessary, also at foreign locations.
